The challenge
Security must not fail because of the device fleet
Printers and multifunction systems are often viewed as secondary in corporate environments, even though they are fully-fledged, addressable endpoints on the network with their own operating system, web interface, and certificate store.
At Infineon, a fleet of printers and multifunction systems at several locations regularly had to be provided with current digital certificates. Digital certificates are cryptographic proofs that verify the identity of a device on the network and enable encrypted communication. They have a limited period of validity and must be renewed regularly.
Since no automated process existed, every renewal cycle involved manual coordination effort across a multitude of devices and locations. Added to this: device passwords were rotated, but devices that were unreachable at the time of rotation retained outdated credentials. There was a lack of audit-proof evidence of the security status for internal and external audits. The IT department required a solution that would fully automatically rectify this state.

Genius Kappa: the Enterprise Security Suite for data protection, operational security and compliance
Infineon uses Genius Kappa, the enterprise security suite from Genius Bytes, for the centralised management of its device fleet. New printers and multi-function systems are detected via automatic network discovery, and master data such as model, serial number, firmware and location are continuously synchronised.
Automated certificate management is connected to Infineon's existing certificate infrastructure. Certificates are automatically renewed before expiration and distributed to the devices in parallel via up to 100 simultaneous worker processes, and this without manual intervention.
Administrator passwords for all devices are stored encrypted in a central database. Passwords are automatically renewed on a regular basis and distributed to all devices. Devices that were unreachable at the time of renewal are automatically updated upon next contact.“
Genius Kappa also continuously checks the security status of each device: certificate validity, firmware version, open ports and network configuration. The results are available as a report at any time.
Benefits at a glance:
- No manual effort – certificate renewal, password rotation and device synchronisation run fully automatically in the background, regardless of device availability or location.
- Complete traceability – Every change to certificates, passwords and device configurations is logged and can be retrieved for auditing purposes at any time.
- Scalable without extra effort – the architecture grows with the fleet. New devices and locations are integrated into the central management without additional configuration effort.

Result
Security through process automation
Certificate management runs fully automated, eliminating the need for manual intervention. Devices with outdated or out-of-sync passwords are a thing of the past. A robust compliance report is available on demand at any time for internal security reviews and external audits. The IT department can focus on strategic tasks rather than manually coordinating routine processes.
The project demonstrates that print infrastructure does not have to be a special case in IT security. Companies facing a comparable challenge – heterogeneous device fleets, decentralized locations, rising compliance requirements – benefit from the same core principles: centralized visibility, automated processes, and audit-proof documentation. Genius Kappa can be deployed regardless of company size or industry and can be integrated step-by-step into existing IT structures.
